Ethiopian police said Saturday they foiled a "terrorist" group that plotted to sabotage the government, detaining 35 suspects.
Police seized different arms, bombs, satellite facilities, computers, radio communications, military uniforms and planning documents, said a statement, issued by a joint anti-terrorist taskforce of the National Intelligence, Security Service and the Federal Police. The group calls itself "Ginbot 7," said the statement. Ginbot is the ninth month in the Ethiopian calendar, but it is the month of May in the Gregorian calendar. Ginbot 7 is actually May 15 according to the Gregorian calendar.
The "Ginbot 7" group is named after the May 15 date in the Ethiopian calendar. The date recalls the election day in the 2005 general elections. The group was accused of launching "subversive activities" and declaring "an armed struggle to dismantle the national constitutional system through force," said the statement.
The group was set up by former opposition leader Berhanu Nega, it said, adding that the group organized both military and civilian sub-teams in the country.
The military sub-team embraced some members of the army and a lot of ex-army members who were dismissed from duty for disciplinary reasons, while the civilian sub-team comprised employees working in various private and government organizations, according to the statement.
