Before the start of the season, Aston Villa fans had high hopes, given manager Unai Emery succeeded Steven Gerrard and engineered a renaissance on such a scale that they went from relegation fears to qualifying for Europe on the campaign's final day.
However, Villa have surely exceeded the expectations of the most optimistic support with a superb season so far that leaves them riding high both domestically and in Europe as they head into 2024.
Emery, perhaps fired up by his perceived failure at Arsenal, appears to be a manager on a mission - driven, meticulous and getting Villa's players to buy in totally to his methods and approach.
Their home form, which saw wins against Manchester City and Arsenal in the space of a few days, has been the bedrock of a season that has not just sparked talk of a place in the top four and next year's Champions League but also as Premier League title contenders. There have even been whispers of "doing a Leicester City" and unseating the established order.
And why not?
Emery has rejuvenated players such as Ollie Watkins, while owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris are fiercely ambitious. If Emery wants reinforcements in January to maintain his magnificent work, they have shown they are prepared to back him.
Gifted midfield man Douglas Luiz may attract admiring glances from Arsenal and Manchester City in the January window but Villa have stood firm on him before. Expect them to do so again if the calls come.
And why would Luiz even want to leave at this point, with Villa right in the mix at home and abroad in the Europa Conference League, where Emery's glittering track record and expertise in this environment places them among the favourites?
Emery is central to it all. With him at the helm, Villa's passionate support can dare to dream for the rest of the season.
