Premier league champions, Accra Hearts of Oak, duo of Ibrahim Salifu and Benjamin Afutu are among five players nominated to contest for NASCO Ghana Premier League player of the season.
Although Salifu looks prime to pick the award having earlier won the home-based Player of the Season gong at the Ghana Football Awards last month, he could face a serious competition from Accra Great Olympics’ Gladson Awako.
Until Awako switched camp to Hearts of Oak at the end of last season, he was the marquee player of Olympics and considered one of the most influential players on the local scene.
Last season he contributed seven goals for Olympics including a sublime free-kick he scored against Hearts of Oak at the Accra stadium. He also recorded seven Assists and won four MVPs to help the Accra-based club finish sixth on the league log.
Also presenting a strong competition is top scorer of the league, Diawisie Taylor, who scored 18 goals for Karela United in 31 appearances as well as Assisting seven times and picking the MVP award four times in the season.
Also, worth mentioning is WAFA’s sensation, Augustine Boakye, who is reported to have joined Austrian side, Wolfsberger, following his enterprising performance for the Sogakope-based side last season.
Boakye was a delight to watch in the league and his effort ensure WAFA finished third in the season having contributed nine goals with 13 Assists and seven MVPs in 29 appearances.
