The Achimota Golf Cub witnessed fierce competition as golfers converged on the course to raise funds to support the Breast Surgical Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The Lady Golfer/Korle Bu Unit Pink October Tournament, organised every October to create awareness of breast cancer, saw Christopher Mbii emerge tops in the men’s category A with 40 points.

Joe Mukwala (39 points) and Elias Hage (38 points) followed in that order.

In the men’s Category B, Jiro Horie picked the topmost prize, returning a score of 45 points to top up the longest drive honours.

After a fierce battle, Mary Prempeh won the ladies Silver division with an impressive 40 stableford points. Floria Hurtubise was the runner-up with 39 points, while Jessica Tei finished third with 37 points.

In the Bronze division, Adwoa Asare Asamoah grabbed the first prize with 42 points, while Dr Adriana Ignea and Louise Serfonten followed with 36 points and 34 points, respectively. Adwoa Asare also picked the longest drive in the ladies division.

Brigette Harrington emerged as the ladies closest to the pin winner, with Benny Mimis picking the men’s version.

In her speech, the Head of the Breast Surgical Unit of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Doctor Florence Dede, said breast cancer should no longer be a death sentence “because there is sufficient evidence to show that when it is diagnosed early and treated effectively, the outcomes are very good.”

The corporate sponsors of the event were Crocodile Machetes in Tema, Platinum Dental, Robesta Chemists Limited in Accra, Vera Causa/Sahel, Mediterranean Shipping Company Ghana Limited, Vestpaiva Foundation, in addition to some private donations.

The Lady president of the Ghana Ladies Golf Union (GLGU) Mrs Esther Amedzro commended the organisers for their efforts.
