The 6th Edition of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Ghana Gold Fields Championship has commenced at the Damang Golf Course in the Western Region with over eighty Professional Golfers drawn across Africa, competing for hoours.
The four day championship, which takes off from December 04 -07, would have sixty Golfers from Ghana, with fourteen from Togo, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe and Cote D'ivoire.
Mr. Kwaku Asare Ofosu Hene, vice President (PGA) at the Tee off noted that the annual Gold Fields Championship was a platform to bring together Professional and Amateur Golfers from Africa to compete at the highest level and to celebrate Golf in Ghana each year.
According to him, the PGA seeks to produce high standard Golfers that would be able to compete at any Golf Championship in Africa and beyond.
"Golf is a professional sport and we are expecting a highly professional output at this edition, where the not so known names in Professional Golfing can rub shoulders with the likes of Kojo Barni, Vincent Torgah and the likes.
"We are looking at seeing the young talents writing their names in the good books of this tournament, we have made some few changes to the Golf course, which is aimed at preparing Golfers for bigger championships outside Ghana in the coming year".
This year’s edition has GH¢40,000.00 as prize money for the Professional Golfers with GH¢10,000.00 earmarked for winner at the seniors category.
The four day event with Gold Fields as the headline sponsor with Zen Ghana, Genser Energy, BCL Boison Construction, WEC Construction, GASO Petroleum, ATS, De simone Limited, Wilhelm limited, BCM Mining, AIA Ghana Limited and Total Ghana as the supporting sponsors.
