Barnabas Aggerh of the Accra Technical University clocked 10.30s in the 100m event to emerge winner in the 2019 GNPC Ghana’s Fastest Human Accra Open held yesterday at the Legon Sports Stadium.
He was followed by Desmond Aryee from the Greater Accra Region who ran 10.50s, with Musah Iddris placing third in 10.51secs in the Male Seniors devision.
In the Women’s category, Kate Agyeman from the Ashanti region and a student at the University of Developmental Studies won the 100m race in 11.3secs, followed by Latifa Ali of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in 11.6secs and Mariam Domfe also from the Ashanti region placing third with a time of 12.2s.
In the U10 boys 60m category, Nakeem Fafawu, a pupil of the Madina1/4 Primary School in the Greater Accra Region came first with a time of 8.60s whilst George Osei from Dr. Saunders Mem. Sch (G/R) 8.70S placed second with Frederick Dadzi, of God's Hand Athletics Club in Accra occupied the third position with 9.10s.
Nura Kayaba, of the Aisha Bintu Sch in Accra won the females 60m with 8.60s, with Christiana Sey, of the Manye Foundation Sch and Stephanie Asare, of God's Hand Athletics Club following in that order.
The U15 Boys 100m category saw Aboagye Agyei, of the Adum Presby Sch in the Ashanti Region winning with 11.2s whilst Abdul Salam Musah, of the Queen of Peace School in Accra and Samuel Larbi of the Services Basic School in Accra placing second and third after clocking 12.70s and 12.71s respectively.
In the Girls U15 division, Tema Community 8, No.1 JHS duo, Diamond Kusime and Makafui Kpotor picked the first and second position with a time of 12.4s and 12.6s respectively whereas Patience Dade of Dr. Saunders Memorial School lying in third position.
The U18 Boys 100m category saw Nathaniel Kyeremateng, of Prempeh College in the Ashanti Region won with 10.4s whilst St. Augustines College in the Central Region duo Fuseini Ibrahim and Odonkor Solomon occupying the second and third place with Benedicta Kwartemaa of Okuapemaa Senior High School in the Ashanti Region winning the U18 Girls event.
Mr Anselm Sowah, the Chief Executive Officer of (CEO) of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) who was special guest at the event commended the organizer, Reks Brobbey, the winners the participants for the good work done. He said ‘‘athletics is a passion and those who love to run must be encouraged to do it better to raise the name and flag of Ghana at international competitions.’’
Dr. Kwame Baah Nuako, the Sustainability Manager of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), encouraged the budding athletes to work extra hard to achieve their aim in the discipline saying ‘‘combining athletics and education is good and I urge you to do your best to become responsible citizens.’’
Reks Brobbey thanked the headline sponsors, GNPC and other supporting sponsors including Adidas, GCB, Wrenco, Moringa King Indomie, Kriate Lync, Pippas Gym and Global Media Alliance for coming on board to sporting the event.
The first eight athletes in each category of the 2019 Ghana’s Fastest Human held in Tamale, Kumasi and Cape Coast would be drawn into a provisional list for the finals billed for Kumasi on September 7.
