Mr. Victor Buston, head coach of Tema Youth baseball club, (TYB), has called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) and corporate organisations to join forces to develop the sport in the country.
According to Mr. Buston, the level of interest in the sport from the various stakeholders, was discouraging, hence the need to support it to develop.
He said the only group that has expressed interest in the development of the sport, was the National Baseball Federation and the national team players.
He said the Ghana Education Service (GES) should include baseball into the inter-schools game competition, just like the other traditional sporting disciplines like, soccer, volleyball, athletics, handball, table tennis and high jump.
He said, that would encourage the young ones, especially students to develop interest and learn about the sport at an early age.
At the lunch of the Inter-school Little League Baseball (ILLB) which took place at Chemu School Park in Tema Community 4, Mr. Buston said; "there are five teams that are ready for this maiden Baseball league and willing to participate for the major trophy and gold medals”.
The two-month games would bring together children from teams registered under the organization, which includes Creator School -Tema, St. Paul Methodist School-Tema, Celestial School Complex- Ashaiman, Tema Ridge School-Tema and Top Royals Community Club-Tema participating in both boys and girls categories”.
“I truly believe this event is part of efforts to sustain the interest and desire of children in the baseball game, whiles promoting and spreading it in the communities, private and public educational institutions in the Metropolis.”
Mr. Buston in an interview with the GNA Sports, appealed to the corporate Ghana and relevant authorities to come to their aid and support them financially.
“The boys and the girls need jerseys and baseball sporting equipment. Even though no one pays us, we are working very hard as a team to develop the game in Ghana."
Creator Schools -Tema led the points table in the Day One of the league with 13 Runs, Top Royals Community Club-Tema scored 12 Runs, St. Paul Methodist School-Tema had 3 Runs, Celestial School Complex- Ashaiman had 3 Runs, and Tema Ridge School-Tema recorded 4 Runs.
