Mr. Emmanuel Tetteh, President of the Ghana Judo Association (GAA) has said, Ghana is capable of making an impact at the next Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.
Speaking to mediamen after the 20th edition of the Japan Ambassador’s Judo Open Championship last Saturday at the Accra Sports Stadium, Mr. Tetteh said, judokas from Ghana have improved a lot and most of them were ready to book a ticket to the next Games.
He said, Raymond Normeshie in the over 100kg division, is regarded as a medal hopeful for Ghana due to his vast experience.
According to Mr. Tetteh, most of the judokas were training on their own, whilst some have been taking part in international tournaments to gain exposure and experience.
He said Razak Alhassan and others who were in Morocco and excelled have been working hard to secure qualification to the event, whilst some coaches and officials would also undergo courses to sharpen their skills.
He said the Japan Embassy had been of tremendous support and they had to go to Tokyo to prove that they were capable of winning.
Mr. Tsutomu Himeno, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, who witnessed the event, expressed his satisfaction with the output of the top Ghana judokas and urged them to train harder, as well as engage in more competitions for exposure to be battle ready.
Mr. Saka Acquaye, Deputy Director General in charge of technical at the National Sports Authority (NSA) commended the participants and officials.
He advised the winner not to rest but keep on training for future events.
