Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he could yet return to action before the end of the year as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury. The 36-year-old scored 28 goals in his first season with United before his year was cut short in April. But the Swede says he is improving day by day and could yet fulfil the prediction of his manager, Jose Mourinho, that he will play again before the end of 2017.
"Let's see if it’s before the New Year or not," Ibrahimovic told United's website. "I'm following my schedule and doing exactly what I'm able to do, and I'm very excited because I'm feeling like I’m getting closer and closer."
Ibrahimovic signed a new one-year deal with United in the summer and says he will not come back until he is 100 percent ready. "It's my first major injury and I know what I have gone through in these months," he said.
"I don't want to make these five, six months look unimportant by rushing now, I take it day by day and when I’m ready I'll be ready."
The former Barcelona, Juventus and AC Milan striker said he was itching to get back on the pitch to help his team, who have made a strong start to the season, sitting joint-second in the Premier League. "The aim is to finish what I started," he said.
"Just for me to come back and have the smell of the grass, feel the heat, feel the atmosphere. That for me will be the trigger point where I will switch on and be the lion that I am."
