Mr. Solomon Lartey Managing Director Activa International Company Limited, has said the scars and sadness that came with the May 9 Stadium Disaster, lingers on the minds and hearts of the nation, after 16 years.
He said the sad event must never occur in the history of the nation again and called on organizations, individual to consider insurance policies as cushion for such occurrences. He said “I am aware that governments past and present as well as society, have tried to assist surviving spouses and/or orphans to carry on, but the success has been negligible”.
“Today we do not only mark the anniversary of May 9 with a cash donation to SWAG, but also an offer of advice to the sporting fraternity, lovers of sports and the general Ghanaian public, that; Surviving spouses and dependents of the deceased could have received lump sum payments if they had bought life or accident insurance products. He noted that, the education of the children of the deceased would have been taken care of by their insurance policies among others.
Mr. Lartey made these comments when his outfit donated GHC 30,000 to the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) towards the 42nd MTN-SWAG Awards, fixed for Saturday, May 27, 2017, at the Banquet Hall, State House, Accra.
“This day commemorates a sad day in Ghanaian sports. Today (Tuesday, may 9) marks the anniversary of the May 9 Stadium Disaster - dark day in the history of sports in Ghana.
“A day that innocent sports enthusiasts of our nation were injured and others stampeded to death. “The scar of sadness and suffering still lingers on. Wives have been left without husbands, husbands without wives, sons and daughters without fathers or mothers. Bread winners lost, bringing untold hardship to families.” He added.
