Ghanaian boxers, Richard Commey, Duke Micah and Frederick Lawson on have paid a courtesy call to the new Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Isaac Asiamah. The three boxers were in the company of their promoters Streetwise Promotions headed by Michael Amoo-Bediako and Errol Hawk Sports Management led by Jacob Zwennes and the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) led by Peter Zwenness.
Lightweight boxer, Richard Commey (24-2-0), will battle Belgian Hedi Slimani (26-2-0) in the bout dubbed ‘‘Freedom Fight Night’’ for the vacant World Boxing Committee (WBC) International Silver Lightweight title.
WBC International Silver Welterweight Title, will feature Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings (19-2, 14 KOs) against highly rated ‘Okunka’ Lawson (24-1, 20 KOs), who makes a first return to the ring since suffering his first career defeat in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) Welterweight title eliminator to Canada’s Kevin Bizier in the US in November 2015.
Also to feature that day is current Commonwealth Bantamweight Champion Micah (19-0, 17 KOs), who takes on Mexican Jonathan Aguilar (17-4, 15 KOs), for the vacant WBC International Bantamweight Silver belt. The promoters and the GBA President Zwennes poured out their concerns with respect to how the government, has neglected the sport that has produced over six world champions for the country. According to Zwennes, his association for the past four years hasn’t received support from government and calls on the current administration to allocate funds to the least financed sports in the country.
The Minister reiterated his assurance to support all the sporting disciplines and added that he is ready to support the event to receive the necessary hype it deserves. Commey, who spoke on behalf of the two other boxers thanked the sports minister for his warm reception and promised they will make the nation proud this Saturday
