Two senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Dan Botwe and Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng on Tuesday expressed shock at news of the death of Major Courage Quashigah (Rtd), a former Minister of Agriculture and a former Minister of Health, describing it as a loss to the party.
He died in Israel where he was undergoing medical treatment, according to a family source.
They expressed their sympathies to the children, the widow and the family.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, a heart surgeon, told the GNA that he saw Major Quashigah at the Cardio Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital about a month ago.
He said news about the passing of Major Quashigah was "a big blow" to the party and to him personally since the late minister was his personal friend.
He lauded his contribution to the stability and peace in the health sector when he was the minister.
Mr Botwe, who is a former General-Secretary of the party, described the death as a loss, saying the party would miss his contributions in the next election.
He said Major Quashigah was a pillar in the party's campaign strategy and he had passed on at a time when they needed all hands on deck to regain power.
Mr Kobla Asamani, Executive Officer at the Office of Major Quashigah, described the death as "sad news" and "a major blow".
"The loss is not only to the family but to the nation as a whole," he said in a tribute.
He described Major Quashigah as "a distinguished man, a statesman who distinguished himself in all his careers".
"It is about time we honour his legacy. We're all sad. The family and entire nation are in a state of mourning."
Mr Asamani last Thursday confirmed the former minister was not well, but said since he had been invited to Israel to share his experiences in Public Service in a special program called, the "Enlightened Speakers Series," he seized the opportunity to participate in the programme and get the second opinion on his health.
Major Quashigah said he looked forward to returning home soon, by the grace of God.
