The Tema East Sub-Metropolitan District Council has been reconstituted, marking a significant step toward strengthening grass-roots governance and improving service delivery across the metropolis.
The ceremony, held last Wednesday, brought together key stakeholders, including security personnel, officials from the Electoral Commission, heads of departments and members of the media.
The event featured the swearing in of newly constituted councillors, followed by the election of a new chairman to lead the council.
In a keenly contested election, Agabby Sumaila Adjetey, Assembly Member for the Oklor Kofi Electoral Area, was elected Chairman of the Tema East Sub-Metro Council after securing 11 votes.
He defeated Joshua Agudaa, Assembly Member for the Dade Agbo Electoral Area, who polled 9 votes
The election was supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission, led by the Tema Metropolitan Director, Manasseh Ofosuhene Asante while, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director of TMA, John Nana Owu, administered the oath of office to both the councillors and the newly elected chairman.
Mr Owu explained that the reconstitution became necessary following the 2024 general election, which resulted in changes to the sub-metro structures.
He called for unity, transparency, and collaboration among council members, as stakeholders expressed optimism that the newly reconstituted council will help transform Tema into a model of effective local governance and sustainable urban development.
In a speech delivered on her behalf, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Ebi Bright, emphasised that the exercise was conducted in accordance with Regulation 2(1) of the Local Government (Sub-Metropolitan District Councils) (Establishment, Composition and Functions) Instrument, 2015 (L.I. 2223).
“The Sub-Metropolitan District Councils are critical pillars of decentralisation.
They serve as a direct link between the Assembly and the communities, ensuring that the voices of residents are reflected in development planning,” she stated.
She further urged the councillors to demonstrate dedication, fairness, and innovation in the discharge of their duties, stressing that effective governance must be rooted in service rather than self-interest.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Adjetey pledged to work closely with the TMA to address pressing challenges facing residents.
He identified irregular potable water supply and poor road networks as priority areas requiring urgent attention.
