The West Akim Municipal Assembly (WAMA) in the Eastern Region has held its Second Ordinary General Assembly Meeting of the Second Session of the 9th Assembly as enjoined by the Local Governance Act. 2016 (Act 936) at Asamankese, the municipal capital.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Paulina Akabila, in her deliberations with the assembly, said that the leadership of the assembly, within the spirit of transparency, accountability, and good governance, was utilising revenue to promote development.
She said the assembly’s monthly sanitation model and campaign were yielding results and hoped to sustain the gains made, while the monthly clean-up was ongoing.
Lauding the various assembly members for organising the event in the various electoral areas and zonal councils, she said, “We are planning to, in the future, deploy the services of mobile refuse vans to all electoral areas to ensure that our communities are clean and rid of filth.’’
Road infrastructure
Touching on roads, Ms Akabila stated that the government considered fixing the roads in the municipality as a priority and commiserated with bereaved families who lost their relatives during unfortunate accidents that occurred at Asamankese, the municipal capital, in the recent past.
“Let me assure this august house that these accidents will be a thing of the past as we have already started working on getting a permanent solution,’’ she said.
Ms Akabila explained that the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) had commissioned a committee to explore alternative routes for the heavy-duty vehicles involved in the accidents, adding that some routes had already been identified and work on those roads would commence soon.
Illegal mining
Regarding illegal mining in the municipality, she said the MUSEC had taken steps to strengthen the fight against it, such as establishing a security task force to conduct unannounced raids on illegal miners, consulting all concession owners and warning that they would be held accountable if any illegal mining activity took place on their concessions.
The MCE also disclosed that chiefs have been engaged in the mining communities and urged them to ensure that no illegal mining occurs in their areas, as well as to oversee the reclamation of all mining pits and to profile all miners in the municipality, among other responsibilities.
She indicated that measures were being undertaken to improve the living conditions of the citizens in the area by providing infrastructure and basic social amenities such as the construction and furnishing of a 6-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Bunso-Asamankese, as well as the construction and furnishing of a 2-unit KG block with ancillary facilities at Bunso-Asamankese.
Others are the construction of a CHPS compound and staff quarters at Odjarde, the construction of seven mechanised boreholes, the completion of a 6-unit classroom block, office and store at Amaako and the completion of a CHPS compound at Nkurakan.
IGF
Ms Akabila said in the quest to increase its internally generated funds and provide employment avenues, the assembly had embarked on aquaculture projects.
The projects, she said, include the construction of three ponds at Bunso junction, with two of them stocked with 10,000 fingerlings, while the other would be stocked with 5,000 fingerlings in the coming days.
The MCE stated that the President’s promise to pay allowances to assembly members had been fulfilled, with 43 members, including the presiding member, already paid.
She, therefore, urged the assembly members to work hard to support management and elevate the assembly to the level they all aspire to.
The Presiding Member, Abdul-Karim Awal, earlier in his opening remarks said that, as the members of the assembly aimed to drive development and progress in the municipality, they should prioritise tabling and passing a resolution on the purchase of motorbikes for the assembly members, to enhance their mobility and service delivery.
