A former National Chairman candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Richard Amoako Baah, has disclosed that plans are far advanced for the formation of a new political party—the New Patriotic Front—to offer an alternative to what he describes as a “corrupt and incompetent” leadership currently steering the NPP.
Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Monday, April 14, Dr Amoako Baah, a political scientist and longstanding member of the NPP, said the party in its current state is beyond redemption due to the firm grip of individuals he alleges are responsible for its failings and massive public discontent.
“If you try to remove them, they will frustrate you quick. It’s impossible. So what is left? Leave them alone. Give the party to them. Form a new one. That’s what I think,” he declared.
“I mentioned it before, New Patriotic Front. Join that one when it comes out. That will be the real NPP, not the one taken over by corrupt leaders.”
Dr Amoako Baah’s remarks come in the wake of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, where Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia lost the presidential race. The party has since launched an internal review process chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, to examine the factors behind the loss.
But Dr Amoako Baah insists no genuine reform can occur under the current leadership.
“You want to fix the party, but those who are involved in the wrongdoings are the ones in charge. So how do you fix it?” he questioned. “Those who were involved in corruption are in leadership roles.”
He added that work is already underway to establish the New Patriotic Front and that an announcement will be made in due course.
“People are working on it. I’m sure in a while, it will come out,” he revealed. “When you see the people in it, you’ll know this is the real NPP,” he stated.
The political analyst was equally unrestrained in his critique of President Nana Akufo-Addo, whom he accused of turning a blind eye to corruption and economic mismanagement.
“This is deliberate thievery... If you know the President, you are untouchable. That’s it. That’s what happened. All the money they’ve taken is stolen with impunity, but we’ll get it back slowly,” he claimed.
He further cited recent controversies involving public officials, including the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), suggesting a pattern of entrenched rot in public institutions under the NPP-led administration.
“How is that possible? A minister and a Majority Leader? What’s going on in this country? Are we attending to a mafia?” he questioned.
The internal strife within the NPP has deepened since the 2024 defeat, with other prominent figures, including Dr Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe and Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, also raising concerns over the direction of the party.
Some members, like Deputy Communications Officer Ernest Owusu-Bempah, have cited poor candidate selection as a key reason for the party's loss—a claim Dr Amoako Baah rebuffed, arguing that such sentiments often emerge after electoral defeat.
“If it’s not your candidate, it’s the wrong candidate. But who is the right candidate?” he asked. “You can only know after the vote.”
