Election 2024: Vote for honest, principled leaders to transform Ghana

Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo has urged Ghanaians to choose a candidate in the upcoming December 7 elections who demonstrates fairness, accountability, trustworthiness, honesty, equity, and respect for diverse opinions.

Speaking at a public forum on “Curbing Illicit Financial Flows Through Accountable Governance: The Role of Media” on December 3, Domelevo emphasized the importance of principled leadership in Ghana’s transformation. He expressed confidence that such leadership is crucial for ensuring the country’s progress and addressing governance challenges.

Domelevo’s comments come at a time when the country is preparing for the presidential and parliamentary elections, with many voters seeking candidates who can lead with integrity and accountability.

“I will entreat you all to vote for a leader who is a father…a fair leader, he gives things based on meritocracy, not because you belong to my party or tribe. He is fair, he rewards people who deserve to be rewarded. That is the father I’m looking for.

He expressed concerns about the source of funding of political parties, calling on the media to help in the fight against corruption.

“I have been worried about political parties’ financing, where do they get that money from? And you see the extravagance being displayed on TV. I wonder, at times, one MP you will hear he has built so so and so. And I ask where did he get the money from?

“Trust me no MP has a salary higher than the Auditor General when I was in office. But there’s no way I can build one for you. I can only build by mouth. So there are definitely different sources that are not known to us. This is where I think if we want to address the issue, we may have to call upon you in the media to help us because the greatest remedy to corruption is transparency.

“Once people are watching, the corruption will cease to do some things that they do. I think it’s time to encourage all of us to fight any illicit financial flows and corruption.”

Daniel Yaw Domelevo has meanwhile backed the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) calls for a forensic audit into the national cathedral project and possible prosecution of the board of trustees.
