The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for taking the Ashanti Region's loyalty to the party for granted and neglecting the needs of the people.
Addressing a massive crowd at the Kumasi Jubilee Park last Sunday, Mr Mahama said that the NPP had failed to deliver on its promises of addressing the pressing concerns of citizens, describing their action as "419 politics".
“The NPP has been unfair to the Ashanti Region. They have taken your votes for granted but failed to deliver the progress they promised.
“It’s time you demand better, vote for real change. The NPP cannot stay away from their ‘419’ ways. Let’s reset this country on December 7th, this year, by voting them out,” he added.
The former President further termed the ruling NPP government’s sudden interest in completing projects days before the elections as a scam to impress the electorate for votes.
“One week to the elections and contractors are suddenly back on the roads. But we all know this is ‘419’ politics—a scam, they would abandon these projects right after the elections.
“It is the NDC that will complete these roads and ensure meaningful development,” he said.
Mr Mahama pledged his commitment to initiate development projects and also complete unfinished ones by the government for accelerated growth.
He, therefore, called on the electorate to vote for change to ensure victory for the NDC, considering the present hardships and rising cost of living.
“Think about the hardships you have endured. Think about the businesses that have collapsed, the youth struggling to find jobs and the rising cost of living. This election is our chance to change the narrative and restore hope for all Ghanaians,” he said.
On the campaign walk, Mr Mahama expressed amazement at the size of the turnout, saying it was proof that the region was ready for something new.
He promised to bring progress, fairness and prosperity to the country when elected.
The rally climaxed the "Enti Asanteman Aseda Ni" Walk, which was held at the Kumasi Jubilee Park where Mr Mahama stressed the need for change and a shift from the region’s voting pattern on December 7.
The air was electric with excitement as the supporters, hundreds of whom were clad in NDC-branded T-shirts and caps, chanted slogans and sang songs in support of Mr Mahama's 2024 presidential bid.
The sound of vuvuzelas filled the air, adding to the colourful gathering of enthusiastic supporters.
