Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), President John Dramani Mahama, has expressed deep disappointment in the leadership approach taken by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing him of sidelining various communities due to political differences.
Mahama, who has been actively engaging with citizens across Ghana, made these remarks in a Facebook post after a tour of 14 constituencies in the Central Region, where he observed the state of development and engaged with local leaders and residents.
According to Mahama, the neglect of these communities appears to be a consequence of what he described as “petty partisan political reasons.”
He emphasised that Akufo-Addo’s administration has failed to meet the developmental needs of areas that did not align with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) politically, causing substantial harm to citizens’ well-being and prospects.
Mahama’s post described a sense of pain and frustration as he witnessed first-hand the obstacles communities face in gaining access to basic infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other essential services due to Akufo-Addo’s alleged biases.
In his statement, Mahama highlighted the importance of fair governance, condemning any approach that punishes communities for their political leanings.
“After touring fourteen (14) constituencies in the Central Region so far, I cannot help but join the chiefs and people in condemning the neglect of our communities for petty partisan political reasons, as President Akufo-Addo himself has stated.
“It pains me to see our cherished communities grappling with the neglect of crucial development projects vital for their growth and well-being.”
Mahama questioned the rationale behind such neglect, arguing that governance should be inclusive, addressing the needs of all citizens regardless of their political choices.
Mahama called this approach unjust and detrimental to the nation’s principles of democracy and equal representation.
“How does a government ignore the needs of the people it governs, seemingly punishing communities for their democratic choices in voting for the NDC and electing its parliamentary candidates?
“This is not just a political issue but a matter of justice and accountability. Every citizen, regardless of their political allegiance, deserves to have their voices heard and their needs addressed.
He further highlighted that every Ghanaian has the right to benefit from government programmes and initiatives, regardless of which party they support.
The former president stressed that the state has a duty to work in the interests of all citizens, and to prioritise essential services that uplift communities.
“As I have done before when I was president and will lead this country to achieve again, development shall be a right for all, not a privilege for a few. The NDC administration of John Mahama and Naana Jane will ensure the progress of our communities and meet your needs, and I promise that no community will be left behind.”
