A total of fifty-eight (58) persons living with disability (PLWDs) contested in this year's District Level Elections (DLEs) in the Ashanti Region, the Electoral Commission (EC), has announced.
Mr. Benjamin Bio, the Regional Director, said 30 of them joined the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) race, with the remaining 28, vying to serve on the unit committees.
He put the number of women candidates in the assembly election at 235, representing 5.6 per cent of the region's total of 4, 197 candidates.
Mr. Bio, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), in Kumasi, that in all 13, 018 candidates contested the DLEs in the area, with 8, 821 of them, fighting to become unit committee members.
Voters through the DLEs are choosing who to represent them in the MMDAs and the Unit Committees.
Ashanti has more than 5, 600 polling stations.
