Mr Eric Kwakye Darfour, the Eastern Regional Minister, has inaugurated an eight-member Regional Population and Housing Census (PHC) implementation committee to oversee the 2020 census activities in the region.
The eight-member committee was inaugurated in Koforidua and included representatives from the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, Information Services Department, National Commission on Civic Education, Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the National House of Chiefs.
The committee is under the chairmanship of the Regional Coordinating Director, Mr Kozie Sambo.
The work of the Committee is to support GSS in the planning and processes leading to successful implementation of the 2020 PHC exercise.
In his inaugural speech, the Regional Minister described population and housing census as an important tool to gather data and information needed for planning and development.
He gave the assurance that the RCC would support the committee in all its activities leading to a successful census and urged the members to give off their best to ensure that the exercise met expectation of the public.
Mr Kofi Agyeman Duah, a representative of the Government's statistician said plans were far advanced to make the 2020 census paperless by using technology such as GPS and digital address system to reach the public for enumeration.
He said as part of the implementation of the census, every structure, wether for residential or business purpose, would be listed and indicated that all persons irrespective of their nationality would be enumerated once they fell within the reference point.
He noted that 60,000 field personnel would be recruited across the country, while there would be extensive education and information for the public to appreciate the exercise.
