Madam Diana Boama, an aspiring assembly member for Kyebi New Town Electoral Area in the Abuakwa South District, says she is in the contest to encourage other women to rise to the challenge.
She said no woman had ever contested the assembly membership position in the area, hence her resolve to join the contest to "break the culture of silence among women from participating in the local polls."
Madam Boama, a Farmer, was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Kyebi, under the "Women's Profile," a GNA initiative to project women contesting in elections in the Eastern Region.
She said it was her third attempt and expressed the hope that come December 17, she would win.
Madam Boama noted that due to the low representation of women in decision-making process in the locality, several issues affecting them and the children had not been given the needed attention.
"It is worrisome the area has no market to support women who are mostly petty traders to support their upkeep," she said.
She said the refuse dump there was in a water-logged area and children had to cross the main road to dispose of refuse, posing danger to their health and that of women.
She said was committed to ensuring that when voted into office, refuse containers would be provided for cluster of homes to prevent the danger of children having to cross the busy road to dispose of refuse.
Madam Boama, 53-year, and a mother of three, is competing with four men and called on women to support her.
