The second annual Obama Foundation Leaders: Africa gathering concluded this past weekend in Johannesburg. During the week-long summit, 200 delegates from 45 African countries came together to explore new ways of tackling some of the biggest challenges in their communities, with a strong focus on contemporary approaches to implementing grassroots change.
A high point for many was Former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel's discussion on ethical leadership. He took the stage for a conversation with CNBC Africa's Nozipho Mbanjwa. The two tackled the subject of making unpopular, but principled, choices and overcoming unique obstacles to lead effectively. Notably for the session, accountability was a major theme. Manuel stated that no one is born unethical, but to prevent society from straying from the path, a structure of checks and balances must be in place. He encouraged each young leader to hold each other accountable as they leave the convening.
