The Centre for Democratic Transitions - Ghana (CDT-GH) has congratulated the Government and people of Zimbabwe on their first democratic elections since the replacement of former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017.
The Centre however noted with concern that what began as peaceful elections on July 30, 2018, now threatened to degenerate into violence and even possibly a nation-wrecking catastrophe as it moved from the casting of ballots to collation and announcement of results.
A Statement signed by Nana Ato Dadzie, Executive Coordinator of CDT-GH and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday said, CDT-GH joined other international bodies and world leaders in appealing to the leadership of the two leading parties, the ZANU-PF and the MDC, to exercise a greater degree of tolerance and call their followers to order and allow the Zimbabwe Elections Commission to dispassionately roll out the final results of the elections.
It said CDT-GH regreted the post-elections disturbances that had already occurred and appealed to the Zimbabwean security forces to endeavour to create a violence-free environment to enable the Zimbabwean people to enjoy their justly-earned democratic dividends.
The statement appealed to the security forces to be measured in their response to any violence that may erupt, if they have to, and to remember that at the end of the day, they are all one people, the people of Zimbabwe, united in their desire to re-join the democratic community of nations.
It said CDT-GH was ready to assist in any way possible to enable Zimbabwe to successfully transcend this political transition which was a test of the country’s democratic resilience and the unity and solidarity of its people.
