The Deputy Eastern Regional Police Commander, ACP Nuhu Jango, has cautioned police personnel against usurping the powers of electoral officers on election day by directing voters as to what to do, warning that defaulters will not be spared.
He urged them to ensure the success of the upcoming general election by acting professionally and not supporting any political party openly.
ACP Jango, therefore, enjoined them to be fair, firm and objective in the discharge of their duties.
He warned that any policeman or woman who would be found aligning himself with or leaning towards any political party or intimidating voters would be dealt with according to service rules.
The Deputy Regional Commander made the call when addressing police personnel drawn from the five administrative districts and six constituencies under the Akyem Oda Divisional Police Command at Oda last Tuesday.
“In the discharge of your professional duties, do not discriminate against personalities on political, ethnic or religious lines as that could undermine not only your credibility, but also the credibility of the entire police institution,” he stressed.
ACP Jango revealed that the police administration had trained a special police squad to ensure an incident–free election, stressing that the squad would assist in preventing ballot box snatching and other electoral offences to ensure the credibility of the polls.
He advised the personnel against absenting themselves without permission, warning that whenever there was a reported case of robbery in an area, police personnel who absented themselves on that day would be linked to the robbery and charged with that offence.
