: Telecommunications giant Vodafone Ghana today spread love and happiness amongst patients in regional hospitals by paying their outstanding bills. In the spirit of expressing love to the less fortunate on Valentines Day, a total of 170 from various departments in the regional hospitals had their outstanding medical bills totalling settled by Vodafone.
Some patients including infants had been in hospital for over three months waiting for their families to gather funds to pay their bills and were being handled by social welfare services at the hospitals. A patient at Korle Bu hospital who should have been discharged 2 weeks ago expressed surprise and genuine gratitude at being told that he could go home that day.
Each released patient was also given a Vodafone handset and credit before their departure from the hospital. In addition, Vodafone Ghana will pay for patients who have not been registered on the NHIS to be registered.
According to Carmen Bruce Annan, Head of Corporate Communications at Vodafone, ‘Valentine’s Day presents an opportunity for Vodafone to express more love to its customers and the people of Ghana. We want to reach out to people who will be kept from their loved ones because of their financial circumstances.’
The patients were released from ten regional hospitals which included the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti region, Sunyani Regional Hospital in Brong Ahafo, Tamale West Hospital in the Northern region, Wa Regional Hospital in the Upper West Region, Bolgatanga General Hospital in the Upper East Region, The surgery and Child Health Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital ,Accra, Ho Regional Hospital in the Volta region, the Efia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region, Cape Coast General Hospital in the Central Region and the Koforidua General Hospital in the Eastern Region.
The greatest number of patients released was in the Northern, Upper West and Upper East regions but those regions also had the smallest amount of outstanding bills.
According to Mustapha Abubakar, PR officer at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, ‘We are grateful to Vodafone for recognising the need for these patients to be close to their support system - their families, on Valentines day.’
The homecoming event which sought to make a positive contribution to the Ghanaian society is an indication of Vodafone’s insight into understanding the need to spread love amongst the less fortunate at a time of love such as Valentine’s Day.
