A Nepalese officer who served in the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan was arrested on human rights charges by British authorities last week, a UN spokesman said Monday.
Martin Nesirky said Colonel Kumar Lama was detained in Britain on Friday. But the nature of the charges was not known.
Nesirky said Lama served as an expert in the UN mission in South Sudan, which like other UN missions employs individual military or police experts provided by governments.
The UN said governments are responsible for the experts' personal backgrounds and must ensure that they have no criminal records.
