Three women were shot dead in south-western Switzerland, allegedly by a mentally ill man who was now in police custody, officials said Thursday.
Two men were also wounded in the attack in the village of Daillon near Sion, about 40 kilometres from the French border, late Wednesday.
Police were called at about 9 pm (2000 GMT) to the village and were able to disarm and apprehend the suspect, the Swiss news agency sda reported.
The 30-year-old alleged shooter, a resident of the village, suffered injuries when he was overpowered by police.
Police said the suspect used at least two weapons - a hunting rifle and a historical carbine from army stocks. It was unclear how he obtained the weapons.
The women - aged 32, 54 and 79 - died at the scene, the authorities said.
Police said the motive for the attack was not immediately known, but the suspect knew the victims. The husband of one victim survived the attack with injuries, Blick.ch reported, and the couple has two children.
Witnesses said the man was drunk. The prosecutor said he had a long-standing problem with drugs and was treated in a psychiatric institution in 2005. A weapon was confiscated from him at the time.
