The government has instructed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to look out for appropriate sites for the establishment of the 200 community senior high schools promised by the National Democratic Congress in its 2012 manifesto.
Mr Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, Deputy Cental Regional Minister and Member of Parliament-elect for the Mfantseman Constituency announced this last week at the meeting of the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly at Saltpond.
He said the NDC promised in its manifesto to establish 200 new senior high schools nation-wide as a means of increasing accessibility to senior high school education.
Mr Quansah said increasing accessibility and training of additional number of teachers were part of measures the government wanted to implement to facilitate the introduction of free SHS in the country by 2016.
He said the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly had been allocated two of the community senior high schools and urged the members to ensure that the schools were sited at places where they could benefit a greater number of students.
The MP-elect appealed to the Assembly to give the directive the urgency it deserved.
Mr Quansah called for the establishment of a welfare fund for Assembly members and pledged a personal contribution of GHc10,000 as seed money.
Mr Allotey Jacobs, a member of the Assembly and Central Region Propaganda Secretary of the NDC who supported the idea also pledged GHc5,000 to towards the fund.
Mr Quansah said assembly members were confronted with many challenges including invitations to functions and needed financial support as they were not paid for performing their duties as assembly members.
