A senator and his son were killed in Baghlan province north of Afghanistan early Wednesday when he ignored police signal for checking, prompting police to open fire, a senior police officer Zalmai Mangal said.
"Senator Yunus, also called Shirin Agha, was driving outside Pul-e-Khumri city in the wee hours today, when police signaled his car to stop for checking, but he ignored and continued driving," Mangal told Xinhua.
"Police doubted there might be militants in the car and opened fire killing two on the spot,"
he said The Interior Ministry confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday.
According to the statement, police were searching for four militants outside Pul-e-Khumri
city when the car of Senator Shirin Agha came in the area at 02:30 a.m. Police signaled him to
stop for checking but he opened fire triggering police to return fire as a result two persons
including the senator were killed and another sustained injuries, the statement said.
