An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck off Canada's Pacific coast, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said Tuesday.
According to the USGS, the quake occurred in Canada's Queen Charlotte Islands region at 7:37 a.m. local time on Tuesday (1537 GMT) at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 km).
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated by the quake.
"It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter," the center said in a bulletin.
The center also warned that for those areas, local authorities can assume the threat is passed when no major waves are observed for two hours
after the estimated time or arrival of damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours.
"Danger to boats and coastal structures can continue for several hours due to the continuing sea level changes and rapid currents," it said.
