Brazilian police Tuesday announced the capture of 500 kilograms of marijuana in two operations in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil's two largest drug markets.
The police found 400 kilograms of marijuana hidden under a sink in a house in Rio's Mangueira shantytown and another 100 kilograms in a car on a
federal highway in Sao Paulo's Ourinhos.
Nine suspects were arrested in Rio and one man accused of being a drug dealer was shot dead by the police.
The car driver arrested during a routine operation on the BR-153 highway in Ourinhos confessed that he was paid 5,000 reais (about 2,924 U.S. dollars) to deliver the drugs to Sao Paulo.
The man was charged with drug trafficking. If convicted, he could be sentenced to five to 15 years in prison.
