District, municipal and metropolitan assemblies have been urged to establish driving schools in their areas of jurisdiction, to ensure the proper training of drivers to prevent road accidents in the country.
Nana Kofi Appiah Adjei, first trustee of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Sefwi Wiawso District branch, made the called in an interview with GNA at Sefwi Wiawso.
He asked the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment, to empower the assemblies to set up such schools adding that the country needed a comprehensive approach in preventing road accidents.
Nana Adjei alleged that some private driving schools in the country did not have the requisite accreditation while the few ones that had official approval used amateur drivers as instructors.
He urged the authorities to check the issuing and use of fake driving licenses to prevent unqualified persons from driving.
Nana Adjei called on government to rehabilitate the Sefwi-Akontombra road network to facilitate socio-economic activities in the area.
Mr. Kwasi Manu, station master at Sewfi Wiawso lorry station, said the GPRTU and the district assembly were planning to decongest the station and relocate big trucks at a new site, which was under construction.
He called for the creation of a pension scheme for drivers, saying that "Drivers are the lifeblood of every nation and state institutions must do all that they can to establish a pension scheme for drivers nationwide".
