The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in collaboration with the Canadian Teachers Federation on Tuesday presented building materials worth GH 2,000 cedis to the AME Zion Primary School at Kobedi in the Sunyani Municipality to roof the school building.
The materials included 200 pieces of Alu-zinc roofing sheets, seven packets of roofing nails and 30 ridge caps.
Mr John Nyoagbe, Deputy General Secretary of GNAT responsible for Education and Professional Development said the donation was part of the association's social responsibility towards deprived communities.
He said they were informed about the deplorable nature of the school as a result of a rainstorm in April this year during the GNAT "Nkabom" project monitoring rounds.
"The pupils arranged their desks under the few shady trees around in 'open air classroom' and this was given wide publicity by the media," he said.
Mr Nyoagbe said the GNAT dialogued with the community and there was the consensus that the school block should be rehabilitated for immediate occupation.
Part of GNAT's mandate is to assist the nation in promoting and delivery of quality education through regular consultations with the government and other stakeholders he said.
Mr Nyoagbe said it was also to provide professional advice on policy and implementation on a wide range of issues not exclusive to education.
Mr Agyei Darko, Assemblyman for Chiraa Gyaase Electoral Area stated that the community did not have any fund to embark on the project but gave the assurance that the work would commence as soon as they mobilized funds to engage a contractor.
In an interaction with Mr Anthony Kwaah, Head teacher of the school, he expressed concern about the inadequate number of tables and chairs for the 365 pupils.
He appealed to the Ministry of Education to come to their aid.
