Mariano Herran Salvatti, former head of Mexico's federal anti-drug agency, has been arrested on charges of abuse of power and peculation, a local prosecutor said on Sunday.
Salvatti is in the federal jail of El Amate, in the municipality of Cintalapa, said the General Justice Prosecutor of the State (PGJE) of Chiapas, in southeastern Mexico.
He is awaiting trial on felony charges including peculation, abuse of power and breach of faith, Raciel Lopez Salazar, chief of the PGJE told a press conference.
Salvatti is the former director of Mexico's Sub-Prosecutor's Office of Investigation in Organized Crime (SIEDO), which is the country's top agency in charge of anti-drug trafficking and organized crime.
Salvatti also served as chief of the PGJE of Chiapas from 2000 to 2006.
