Eleven vehicles were damaged on Wednesday morning in a pileup accident on the Accra end of the Accra-Tema Motorway but there was no casualty.
The accident was caused by a Mercedes Benz tipper truck loaded with sand, which ran into a car near the old toll booth on the Accra end of the motorway.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Reynolds Ampem in-charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Airport Police Station, said the tipper truck had a brake failure near the toll booth, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The truck ran into the car ahead and the pile-up started causing severe damage to a number of them.
The driver of the tipper truck, Emanuel Kwatey, who escaped unhurt, said when he realized the truck would not stop when he applied the brakes, he tried in vain to avoid hitting any vehicle but he could not find a safe place where he could steer the car.
According to the police, two people have been treated and discharged as a result of the accident and investigations are continuing.
ASP Ampem advised people to drive carefully and also have their vehicles serviced regularly.
He said most accidents on the roads were due to bad maintenance of vehicles as well as reckless driving and speeding.
