The Adansi South District Assembly has voted 150 million cedis towards disaster management in the district this year.
Mr Francis Dorpenyoh, Adansi South District Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), who announced this said the money could have been used to provide social amenities to improve upon the living conditions of the people.
He said, however, that the Assembly had been forced to cede the money for disasters because some people would rather cause disasters instead of helping to prevent them through their anti-social activities.
Mr Dorpenyoh was speaking at the celebration of this year's World Disaster Reduction Day at Subin Camp, near New Edubiase on Wednesday.
He mentioned the over exploitation of the forests, bush burning, building houses on waterways, citing of kiosks over drains and other unauthorised places as some of the activities which caused disasters.
Mr Dorpenyoh announced that NADMO had nursed about 1,000 seedlings to be distributed to communities to plant to serve as wind breaks as well as economic trees for them and urged members of the communities to help nurture the trees to grow.
Mr Godfred Kporfeame, the District Director of Food and Agriculture, advised farmers to seek assistance from his outfit before applying any agro-chemical since most of the farmers misuse the chemicals which damage the environment.
He noted that farming along streams and rivers was a habit of farmers in the district and pointed out that due to this practice, most of the streams had dried up in most of the communities.
Mr David Oppong Darko, Deputy District Environment Health Officer, asked the people to clear the weeds around their houses to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and creating a habitat for snakes and other dangerous reptiles.
