The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has taken temporary custody of a newborn baby found abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina in the Central Region, assuring the public that the child is in stable condition and receiving medical care.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 19, 2026, the Ministry said the baby, believed to be about a day old at the time she was found, is currently under medical supervision and responding well to treatment.
“Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety,” the statement highlighted.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service, working in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, has launched investigations to identify and locate the mother or any close relatives of the baby.
The Ministry stressed that the infant’s overall well-being remains its top priority, adding that arrangements have been put in place to ensure she is properly catered for as investigations continue.
The Gender Ministry also commended residents who rescued the baby and urged members of the public with relevant information to assist with ongoing investigations.
In addition, the Ministry appealed to parents or guardians facing challenges, particularly in cases involving unplanned or crisis pregnancies, to seek support through appropriate social welfare services rather than resort to abandonment.
It further encouraged the public to make use of its Helpline of Hope Call Centre on toll-free numbers 0800-800-800 and 0800-900-900 for counselling, guidance, or to report concerns involving children and other vulnerable persons.
“The Ministry emphasizes that abandoning a child is a serious violation of their rights and remains committed to protecting the welfare of all children,” the statement concluded.
