“Beyond the Visible”, the structural monitoring project developed by Eni in collaboration with the Fabbrica di San Pietro, presented within the framework of the Fourth Centenary of the Dedication of St Peter’s Basilica (1626–2026).
In a year of particular significance for the Basilica, Eni has placed its advanced engineering capabilities and multidisciplinary expertise at the service of one of the world’s most important cultural and spiritual landmarks.
Building on a collaboration that dates back to the Great Jubilee of 2000, the project has led to the implementation of an integrated and permanent structural monitoring system, combining geophysical investigations, geological and hydrogeological analysis, high-precision sensors and the creation of a fully interactive 3D digital twin of the entire monumental complex.
Through the work of EniProgetti and a team of geophysicists, geologists, engineers and technical specialists, more than 4,500 hours of field activity were carried out across approximately 80,000 square metres, both above and below ground. The system is now fully operational and provides continuous, real-time monitoring, supporting long-term conservation and preventive safeguarding strategies.
The project was presented by H.E. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican, and Claudio Granata, Director of Stakeholder Relations & Services at Eni.
