Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has criticised the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), alleging that the professional body has lost its relevance and credibility.
Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, February 17, Dafeamekpor rejected claims that he is undermining the GBA by establishing the Law Society of Ghana.
“GBA has crippled itself; I haven’t. For some time now, GBA has converted itself into a supporter of the NPP agenda. GBA has lost its glory as a professional body,” he stated.
He further alleged that actions taken by the association in the 1990s against the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and his administration were intended to advance the cause of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to him, some of those activities contributed to the NPP’s victory in the 2000 general elections.
“In the 90’s, all the things the GBA did against the late former President Jerry Rawlings and his government were to advance the course of NPP. Some of those activities led to the NPP winning the 2000 elections,” he alleged.
Dafeamekpor also accused the GBA of being consistently outspoken in what he described as an anti-government posture whenever the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in power.
“The GBA was vociferous anytime the NDC was in government, in an anti-government way. GBA has lost its glory and lustre as a professional body,” he said.
He added that the Law Society of Ghana, which he founded, currently has more than 2,000 members and is issuing licences to new entrants into the legal profession.
