The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the distribution of 6,607,095 sanitary pads to schoolgirls across all 16 regions of the country as part of efforts to mark the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child.
The initiative, carried out under the theme “The Girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis,” seeks to promote menstrual hygiene, safeguard the dignity of girls, and ensure that no student misses school due to menstruation.
According to the GES, the intervention fulfills the Government of Ghana’s pledge to provide free sanitary pads to all schoolgirls from basic to second-cycle level, on a monthly basis throughout their school life.
The service explained that the programme underscores the government’s commitment to gender equality in education, health promotion, and adolescent empowerment.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations at GES, Daniel Fenyi, the service reaffirmed its dedication to building an inclusive and equitable education system that responds to the needs of every learner. It also encouraged girls to remain focused on their studies and take advantage of the opportunities provided.
