The management of the Volta River Authority (VRA) has provided scholarships to 60 students to pursue courses in the country's public universities.
The Authority is investing GHC 1 million to cater for the tuition and living expenses of the students for the duration of their academic pursuits.
The beneficiaries were selected from the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic years.
The initiative is part of the Authority's Community Development Programme (CDP) aimed at developing skilled human resources in communities impacted by the Authority's operation.
The scholarship aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal four on quality education, which promotes inclusive and fair access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for everyone.
The Authority has, since 2011, supported 445 students from communities around the Akosombo, Akuse, Kpone, Tema and Aboadze areas.
Mr Edward E.Obeng-Kenzo, the Chief Executive of VRA, said the programme was designed to provide brilliant but needy students with equal opportunities to access quality education, geared towards human capital skills empowerment in our impacted communities.
"At VRA, we understand that our impacted communities should benefit from the development opportunities our presence delivers.
"After decades of power generation that transformed Ghana's industrial landscape, we recognise that the future leaders of our country should have equitable access to quality education which will empower them to participate meaningfully in Ghana's development," he said.
He said last year, 33 of the beneficiaries successfully graduated with 12 first-class honours and 21 second-class honours, with the alumni excelling in diverse fields and creating lasting impact in their communities and beyond.
Mr Obeng-Kenzo announced that an online scholarship application system had been designed to streamline the process, improve accessibility, and ensure timely communication to support its sustainability drive and build mutual trust.
He stressed that the process would help curb some challenges faced by the scheme, such as late submission of applications, travel and administrative bottlenecks.
The Chief Executive said the vision of the Authority was to be "A Model of Excellence for Power Utilities in Africa".
He advised the beneficiaries that the goal of excellence should define their pursuit for greatness as they make good use of the worthy investment.
Since 2011, the VRA scholarship scheme has supported 445 young men and women from the communities in the
This means a total of 505 young men and women from our impacted communities have so far benefited from the CDP scholarship programme.
Awulae Attibrukusu III, a board member of VRA, advised the beneficiaries to perform well since there were equally qualified students for the award.
He said the Authority would follow up at their schools to monitor their performances, saying any student who underperform would be withdrawn.
Mr John Atteh Martey, the Municipal Chief Executive of Lower Manyo Krobo, commended the Authority for the initiative to help beneficiaries to achieve their potentials.
Miss Magdalen Gota, on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the management of VRA for the opportunity and pledged to use their education to serve the community.
