The La Traditional Council in the Greater Accra Region has officially unveiled plans for the 2025 Homowo Festival, set to begin from July 10.
Celebrated annually, the Homowo Festival draws visitors from across the region and abroad. It serves as a vital occasion for preserving culture, promoting unity and community development, and boosting local tourism and economic activity.
The festival also provides a platform for partnerships and sponsorships, promotes peace and security, and garners media attention as well as advocacy opportunities.
The launch event, held last Friday in Accra, brought together chiefs, elders, representatives from the various clans in La, businesses and organizations to discuss the various activities scheduled for the month-long celebration.
The Secretary of the 2025 La Homowo Planning Committee, Jeffery Tetteh presented the programme of events while the elders engaged participants in an interactive session, addressing questions related to preparations, security, media coverage and side attractions, among others.
Some of the activities are planting of the sacred millet, yam festival, fishing expedition for harvesting of the red snapper, the sacred fish used in preparing the soup for kpokpoi, ban on drumming and noise making and oath of swearing ceremony among others.
In attendance were His Royal Highness Agbawe Akutson Mantse, Iyemliniaba Nii Adjei Aswah Oweni II, La Shikitele, Nii Adjei Koofeh IV, La Akwashontse, His Royal Highness Nii Yemodin II and Acting Linguist of LA, Nii Anum Tetteh,
Others were Nuumo Tetteh Ojetor (La Amlakui Atse), Nii Mensah Eric (Agbawe Tooyitso) and Nii Adjei Quao (Dzrasee Akutsontse).
Also present were the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah; the Homowo Planning Committee Chairman, Mr Josh Komieteh; the Mayor of La, Mr Alfredo Nii Anyetei; and Madam Akua Zara Lartey, representative of Labadi Beach Hotel.
The event featured vibrant cultural performances by children from De-Blessing Foundation, an NGO dedicated to nurturing young talent through dance.
La Shikitele, Nii Adjei Koofeh IV, officially launched the 2025 edition of the festival and emphasized that this year’s theme, “Respect for All: The Foundation for a Stronger Society,” is timely and fitting.
He mentioned that the theme aims to foster respect and unity among stakeholders, which are essential for a successful celebration.
He expressed confidence in the leadership of the La Traditional Council, assuring that they are committed to supporting a well-organized and high-quality festival.
“Now that we have all been enlightened about how our traditions and culture relate to the La Homowo Festival, on behalf of the chiefs and people of La and our affiliate towns, I officially declare the 2025 La Homowo Festival launched,” he announced.
He further called for the support of the Council of Chiefs and elders, expressing hope that the necessary resources will be made available to ensure the festival is celebrated in unity, love, and peace.
Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah speaking on behalf of her Minister, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, and as the MP for La Dadekotopon Constituency, expressed her joy at participating in the launch of the 2025 La Homowo Celebration.
She highlighted that the theme reflects the importance of unity and mutual respect in building a cohesive community.
She thanked the elders and the planning committee for choosing such a meaningful theme and emphasized that respect is essential in any community.
She also acknowledged existing issues in the town, particularly among the youth, and expressed hope that the festival would provide an opportunity to address them constructively.
“I thank God that by His grace, we have lived to witness yet another Homowo celebration. I encourage everyone to contribute in diverse ways to ensure a successful festival. I also extend my gratitude to the invited organizations, and I trust that you will support the chiefs and people of La in making this year’s celebration peaceful and successful,” she said.
"Wherever we find ourselves in Dadekotopon let us preach peace and respect for one another so that together we will build a better Dadekotopon," she added.
