Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL), a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, a leading player in Ghana's wastewater treatment sector, has emphasised the need for proper waste management practices.
It had also called for government support to effectively operate and replicate its services across the country.
The company, which currently operates six plants in Ghana, aims to expand its services to all 16 regions.
Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps on Wednesday during an industrial visit to Lavender Hill Fecal Treatment Plant in Accra, Mrs. Lola Asiseh Ashitey, General Manager of SSGL, said the company faced significant challenges, including the mixing of solid waste with liquid waste, which hindered their treatment processes.
"If we do it right, we do it right for ourselves. If we go to the public toilet and dump solid waste, it makes it difficult for us to treat here because everything comes back to us," she said.
Mrs. Asiseh Ashitey, urged the public to adopt proper waste management practices, such as not throwing solid waste into liquid waste streams or public toilets.
This, she explained, would help prevent the spread of diseases like cholera and enable the company
to effectively treat wastewater.
She also appealed to the government for regular payment and support to enable SSGL to replicate it's services across the country.
Mrs. Ashitey said: "Since commencing operations in 2017, we have successfully eliminated cholera in the Greater Accra Region, and we aim to achieve similar results nationwide.
"Proper management of fecal matter is crucial for preventing the spread of diseases and maintaining public health." The Press Corps also visited the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant at Adjen Kotoku and the Zoomlion Transfer Station Pantang.
