The European Union (EU) has handed over equipment worth GH¢800 million to the Ghana Armed Forces to help bolster the country’s defence efforts.
The package includes engineering equipment, advanced communication systems and riverine assets.
The donation follows the provision of 105 militarised vehicles in 2023, with additional support scheduled through 2026 to further strengthen Ghana’s defence capabilities.
The European Union Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly, who presented the equipment, underscored the importance of EU countries and Ghana committing to defending the shared values and ensuring the safety of the people of both territories.
EU's support, he said, aligned with broader international efforts to contain the spillover of insecurity from the Sahel and strengthen Ghana's role as a bulwark against regional instability.
The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, expressed gratitude for the EU’s steadfast support, saying the equipment would empower the country’s security forces to protect the citizens and uphold their democratic values.
By enhancing Ghana’s deterrence capabilities, he said the EU bolstered the country’s resilience against violent extremist groups and its cherished stability.
“Ghana deeply appreciates the EU's steadfast support. This equipment will empower our security forces to protect our citizens and uphold our democratic values,” he said.
The National Security Advisor to the President, Prosper Douglas Bani, said a comprehensive security approach was necessary against "violent extremist groups, the expansion of transnational organised crime networks, and the persistent threat of cross-border instability".
He said the equipment would also help curb illicit activities such as smuggling and illegal fishing along Ghana's waterways.
The support, he said, would serve as a vital reinforcement to Ghana’s security infrastructure, enhancing the country’s ability to address emerging security challenges.
“Threats endanger national security, disrupt livelihoods, weaken communities and impede economic progress and, therefore, the equipment received will be instrumental in strengthening the security forces in multiple ways.
“The advanced communication systems will enhance coordination, intelligence-sharing and response capabilities, ensuring troops operate more efficiently,” he added.
