The Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) have elected Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun as their new Chairman during the 21st Regular Meeting held at Koforidua Technical University. Rev. Prof. Eshun, who currently serves as the Vice-Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University, succeeds Sir Prof. Elias N. K. Sowley in this leadership role.
Over the years, Ghana’s Technical Universities (TUs) have been at the forefront of the nation’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) efforts, playing a crucial role in competency-based education that meets industry standards.
As Ghana shifts toward an innovation-driven economy, Technical Universities are instrumental in equipping students with the practical skills needed for workforce integration and national development.
In his new role, Rev. Prof. Eshun will continue to lead initiatives that expand the reach and impact of TUs, which are committed to nurturing a new generation of graduates ready to tackle real-world challenges. “I am deeply committed to enhancing the quality of technical education in Ghana.
Together, we will ensure that our graduates are not only skilled but also ready to meet the demands of the modern workforce,” he stated.
Rev. Prof. Eshun’s academic credentials and leadership experience make him uniquely qualified to guide the VCTU-G in strengthening partnerships among Technical Universities and with governmental, industrial, and international organizations.
He holds a BSc in Physics and an MSc in Wood Technology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), as well as a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Since joining Takoradi Technical University in 1999, he has held numerous leadership positions, including Dean of Engineering and Vice-Rector, culminating in his current role as Vice-Chancellor.
Rev. Prof. Eshun is an active member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and the International Forest Association and consults for the International Tropical Timber Organization, promoting sustainable practices in tropical timber production.
The VCTU-G, comprising all Vice Chancellors of Ghana’s publicly funded Technical Universities, serves as a collective voice in advocating for the growth of technical education in Ghana through collaboration, innovative research, and industry partnerships that benefit both students and the economy.
Outside of academia, Rev. Prof. Eshun is a Lay Minister at Lighthouse Chapel International in Takoradi, and he and his wife, Mrs. Josephine Baaba Eshun, are blessed with four children.
