The Ghana Education Service (GES) has instituted an administrative investigation into the stabbing to death of Edward Sackey, a final-year student of the O’Reilly Senior High School.
The investigation is expected to be concluded within two weeks, a statement signed and issued on Wednesday by the head of the public relations unit of the GES Cassandra Twum Ampofo said.
The statement said the GES was, “deeply saddened by the tragic incident … Our thoughts and condolences go out to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire school community.
“Today, September 4, 2024, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service led a team to visit the school and the deceased’s family to commiserate with them.
“We will continue to support the school and assure the public that we are working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation,” the statement assured the public.
The statement explained that while management were handling the administrative investigation, the Police Service was handling the criminal investigation.
“We are pleased to report that calm has been restored on the campus, and we are working to ensure the well-being and safety of all students and staff,” the statement said.
It said the GES remained committed to providing a secure and conducive learning environment for all students.
The statement further gave the assurance that the GES would continue to work tirelessly to prevent such incidents and ensure its schools remained safe spaces for academic excellence.
“We urge the public to refrain from speculations and allow the investigative processes to unfold. We will provide updates as necessary,” it concluded.
What happened?
The stabbing to death incident happened during an argument over whose father was wealthier.
The victim, Edward Borketey Sackey, a General Arts student, was reportedly engaged in an argument, with a schoolmate over whose father was wealthier. This happened after they had finished writing an exam.
The argument is said to have degenerated into fisticuffs and Edward Borketey Sackey was stabbed multiple times.
