Training programme for 300 students and 60 faculty members of the Ghana Communication Technology University Business School (GCTUBS) in the use of cutting-edge accounting software to increase their value both in the classroom and the job market was held in Accra on Thursday.
The software for the seven-day training which were QuickBooks and Tallyprime would help the trainees automate tasks within the accounting process.
It was organised by the GCTUBS in collaboration with Prymage, an accounting consultancy firm on the theme “Millennium Business Solutions”.
The Dean of GCTUBS, Professor George Oppong Ampong, said the purpose of the training was to ensure that the entire faculty members were equipped with the requisite knowledge of modern accounting software to in turn train industry-standard students.
“In this digital age, the skills that are required for our business students to meet the changing times of the digital age is what we are providing them with,” he said.
He stated that the training would be organised as often as possible as the technology world was constantly evolving hence the need to keep our faculty members and students up to date.
“We often have these trainings, seminars and other capacity-building exercises. Next month, we will have an international conference on entrepreneurship which will centre on how best we can prepare the students for tech-based entrepreneurship to better prepare them for the job market,” he said.
The Head of Department, Department of Accounting, Banking and Finance, Dr Emmanuel Amfo said the training came at the right time as the GCTUBS has introduced a Master of Science (MSC) in Forensic Auditing and Accounting degree and knowledge in accounting softwares would be essential to the course.
He added that the capacity building programme would not only be limited to accounting but also extended to other programmes offered by the GCTUBS.
“The challenges associated with the study and practising of accounting was software so we need the skills in information technology to excel,” he said.
The facilitator of the training and General Manager of Prymage, Mr Samuel Anim, said it was high time for all persons in the accounting field to be equipped with knowledge in software so they can compete with other professionals in the western market.
“The students during their academic journey should try and study at least one or two accounting softwares to complement their skillset,” he added.
