THE Dominion University College has announced plans to establish an effective centre of excellence for artificial intelligence (AI) to train and empower the youth through information technology (IT) and business opportunities.
This, according to the Chairman of the University, Prof. Felix Nikoi Hammond, was aimed at contributing towards the reduction of unemployment among the youth, particularly women in the country.
He said his outfit would be running the centre in partnership with some high-profile organisations in the United States of America (USA) to empower a future ready-workforce through artificial intelligence education at the university.
Prof. Hammond made this known in an interview with the media on the sidelines of the 6th graduation ceremony of Dominion University held in Accra, which was on the theme; “Think possibilities.”
“Critically, the yet-to-be established centre, which would be positioned on the premises of the Dominion University College’s new ultramodern edifice at East Legon in Accra would be training our youth, women and girls and empower them in IT and business opportunities.
“The centre would be positioned in such a way that our youths, women and girls who will be enrolled would not go through the mass educational system.
They would be trained in effective entrepreneurship and equipped to properly go out there, knowing what exactly they are going to do,” he added.
Prof Hammond pointed out that the management of the university had already started raising funds internationally because they could not depend on the university to raise the needed funds to run the centre.
He charged the graduates to uphold integrity, character and workplace competence.
The overall best student for the 2020/2021 academic year received GH¢3,000 while the best students in the various disciplines took home GH¢GH1000.00 each
Prof. Hammond congratulated the graduates and urged them to use the knowledge they have acquired to transform their lives.
For his part, the President of Dominion University College, Prof.Nicholas N.N Nsowah-Nuamah, urged the graduates not to associate themselves with the negative influential people in their personal lives.
He asked them to be mindful that negative or unhealthy influences could generally impede their progress in the future.
"You should always remember that a lot of resources, both human and financial, have been committed into your training.
Therefore, I charge you to go out there and commit yourself to hardwork, dedicated and honest work to justify the huge investment made in your training.
Professor Nsowah-Nuamah also announced that the university had a total of 10 MSc/MPhil students and 19 PhD students, adding that the university had submitted to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) some MBA programmes in Marketing, HR and Finance as well as PhD in Business Administration and Doctor of Business Administration.
A total of 118 students who graduated (69 males and 49 females) were awarded Bachelors degree certificates.
Ten of the graduates had First Class honours, 50 had Second Class Upper with 41 obtaining Second Class Lower.
Thirteen of them had third Class, while four went home with Passes.
The Co-founder of Scaanz Wyoming, USA, Dr Kirill Mostov, who was the guest of honour, called on the university to develop products that were solution-driven for industries, private and public agencies to create a financial backbone for its sustainability.
