Calidad Farms Limited is a fish farm and hatchery in Accra that seeks to take aquaculture to a higher level. The company is also into the training of young people who have an interest in fish farming.
Calidad Farms Limited, formally known as Weija Farms Limited, is owned by Wilfred Agbi, a young farmer and entrepreneur. Wilfred doubles as a technical sale consultant for Cycle Farms Ghana Limited, manufacturer of Enam Papa fish feed. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management, Fisheries, and Watershed Management aside from other educational qualifications.
According to Wilfred, Calidad Farms Limited was born out of a keen interest in putting into practice the ideas he had developed as a student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He also explained that his internship at Lee’s farm on the Volta Lake was also helpful to his career. There as an intern, he learned the application of sound management principles in fish farming which he applies to his work.
Started in 2019, Calidad Farms Limited aims to increase the numbers and output of fish farmers and to make high-quality technical management accessible to fish farmers. Wilfred noted that aquaculture has improved significantly in Ghana in recent years. However, there is a need for better quality management, especially regarding water, feed, health, and biosecurity.
The company believes in the role aquaculture can play in the national economy- cutting down on fish import bills, providing jobs, and providing a stable source of protein for Ghanaians. The farm produces over 30,000 catfish fingerlings every month for sale. It is also into aquaculture evangelism. Trained persons from Calidad Farms Limited move to the Eastern and Volta regions of Ghana, assisting people to start fish farms at home or on their farms. They also provide learners with training and technical support.
Calidad Farms Limited is also into the production of mushrooms, fresh eggs, rabbits, and organic vegetables. Wilfred Agbi aims to install the first major cage farm outside the Volta Lake, on the Weija Lake as his major contribution to aquaculture in Ghana.
