The celebration is based on the main theme of the 77^th Session of the UN General Assembly “Solutions through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science” which sought to put the role of science at the centre stage of the UN body’s decision shaping to guide the future.

Ghana has adopted a local theme, “Building on the 3s – Solidarity, Sustainability and Sciences – towards a more resilient Ghana,” to amplify the need for evidenced-based decision making for sustainable development.

Consequently, an Ad-Hoc Committee for the planning of this year’s United Nations Day yesterday held its second preparatory meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration (MFA&RI) on Wednesday.

Chaired by Assistant Director II of the Multilateral Relations Bureau of the MFA&RI, the meeting deliberated on activities to mark the 77^th milestone of the global body, which will include UN Day Walk, a Flag Raising ceremony to be addressed by both the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the UN Resident Coordinator and photo exhibition of the activities of the UN Nations, especially Ghana’s role in the organisations.

The ad-hoc committee membership includes representatives of ministries, departments and agencies, media, United Nation’s Resident Coordinator’s Office, Ghana United Nation Students and Youth Association and Life –Link Friendship School.

The October 24 is celebrated as the United Nations Day, to commemorate the landmark event of October 24, 1945 when the organisation’s charter was ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United Stated as an intergovernmental organisation with the mandate to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a centre for harmonising the actions of nation.

The annual celebration of the United Nations Day had been on the quiet over the past two years due, to the global COVID-19 pandemic with the attendant restrictions on public gatherings to curb the spread of the disease.                     

The United Nations has set Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, adopted in 2015, at the closure of the Millennium Development Goals, to achieve a better and more sustainable future for humankind.

Ghana has been in the frontline playing very effective role in the United Nations since joining the global organisation two days, after gaining Independence on March 6, 1957, and is among the 10 contributor of troops for UN Peacekeeping operations in trouble spots across the globe.
